About The Stockhom Seamstress

Hi, my name is Kait, and I am glad you stopped by!

I grew up in Southern California and learned to sew from my grandmother when I was 16.  In high school, I was too busy being a musical theater geek, registered thespian, student theater critic, and sociable teenager to complete more than a few projects before I moved to Paris for university where I spent two blissful years studying, exploring the city, improving my French, and thinking about everything except sewing.  It wasn’t until I moved back to California for a gap year that I experienced a renewed interest in sewing, built a huge collection of vintage patterns, and bought my own machine.  I took that machine with me to Montreal, where I spent three busy years finishing my degree, starting but never finishing projects, and building a fabric stash.  After graduation I met my wonderful fiance, he found a job in Stockholm, and now I have all the time and resources I need to sew!  HAPPILY EVER AFTER indeed!

    Hej Kait,
My name is Leea and I just moved to Stockholm from the US. I also have a love for vintage patterns and fabric. I was wondering if you would like to get together sometime. I would love to meet someone with common interests that could maybe help me with finding the right places to go for supplies and inspiration. Tack!

    • Hi Leea! Welcome to Stockholm!

I can definitely help out with places to shop for supplies. Try Tygverket in Sodermalm, Ohlssons (Hötorget, with by-the-kilo bargain bins), and Sundybergs Textilcentrum (my favorite though out of the way) for fabrics and notions, and you must try Kreatima on Kungsgatan 58 for other craft supplies.

For higher end fabrics check out Sidencarlson on Drottninggatan (pricey but seriously beautiful wools, silks and viscose here as well as a good selection of knits and very knowledgeable staff).

For yarn there are quite a few places in Sodermalm near Mariatorget and a couple good ones near Odenplan (Nortullsgatan has a great little one with knowledgeable, friendly staff).

I am told there used to be a place out by IKEA for amazing fabric shopping but I wasn’t able to find it last time I went out there.

As for meeting up, I am currently looking into starting a sewing circle, so check out my post on that and let me know if you have any ideas. 😀

Hey Kait! I stumbled across your blog when I was googling around for sewing lessons in English in Stockholm. In the past few years I’ve been an avid knitter but I’m wanting to expand my clothing making abilities. I’m working as an au pair on a gap year and I have a sewing machine at my disposal, and would love on my free time to take some sewing lessons. If you’re interested, let me know your prices and drop me a line at: lilyfalk1@gmail.com

    • Thanks for your interest! I am flattered that you thought to ask for for lessons. While I would love to help you, I am unable to as I am in the process of moving to France. Do look into courses at ABF and Folkuniverstitet, though, as they have all kinds of sewing lessons there. Best of luck! 😀

Hi Kait! Oddly enough, I’m also a Cait from California in Stockholm! And I’m looking for a seamstress, which is how I found you (nicely done, you’re the first thing shown when googling Stockholm Seamstress). I’d love to contact you privately but not sure how. Feel free to email me at the linked address. Nice blog and hope we get in touch! 🙂

    • Thank you for you for you interest, Caitlin! I really appreciate it! Sorry it took a while to respond. While I would love to help you, I am in the process of moving to France so I am not doing a lot of sewing right now. Good luck with finding someone! 😀

Hey Kait, do you do prototypes? I am thinking of creating a new fashion line, and need prototypes for factories.

    • Hi Shirley! I am so sorry to get back to you this late. I have not been blogging for a long time and have just moved to the United States. I would have loved to help you and sincerely appreciate your inquiry, but I am unavailable to assist you with your request. I hope all goes well with your fashion line!
